So, you want to nail your side aerial? Whether you’re just starting out or fine-tuning your technique, the right drills can make all the difference. Aerials aren’t just about throwing yourself over and hoping for the best—it's about strength, flexibility, and confidence. In this post, I’m breaking down some of my favorite side aerial drills that will help you build strength, improve technique, and get you flipping like a pro. Let’s get to work!
A side aerial is a no-handed cartwheel that requires a combination of speed, strength, and technique. Unlike a regular cartwheel, where your hands touch the ground for support, a side aerial is executed entirely in the air, making it a much more advanced skill.
Side Aerial Drills
Cartwheel Uphill-(hands on elevated surface)
Cartwheel Uphill-(hands on lower surface)
Far Arm Cartwheel
Hop Cartwheel Uphill
Pop Cartwheel Uphill
When practicing these drills, focus on doing them with proper technique. Since each one is a variation of a cartwheel, be sure to land with your hips squared and finish in a tight lunge. Keep your legs straight in the split position, and always kick them directly over your head—not around the side. If the uphill drills feel too challenging, try using a lower surface and gradually work your way up. It’s better to start low and build control than to force a height you’re not ready for yet!
